6/19/2004 - Volunteers for the Guadalupe County Extension 4-H program in Texas must agree to criminal background checks before working with children in the 2004-05 4-H year, according to the Seguin Gazette-Enterprise.
The background checks are meant to increase the safety of youth involved in the Texas 4-H program and reflect the changing times where charges of child abuse are more likely to end up in court.
Representatives of the 4-H program explained that background checks discourage people with past problems from seeking to work with 4-H children, and also show that the program is exercising diligence in screening volunteers.
The county 4-H Council is paying the total cost of each background check.
