6/19/2004 - The 3,200 volunteers who work in Olympia, Washington schools will have to answer a seven-part questionnaire and consent to criminal background checks in order to work in local schools, according to an article in The Olympian.
Conceived to protect children from predators and the district from liability, the policy has generated considerable debate since last fall, with critics complaining it will alienate some parents from spending time in their children's classrooms.
Still, parents say they want assurances that volunteers working with their kids are safe.
"I would like to know my child is not going to be alone with anyone who hasn't had a background check," said one parent.
